From now on, you have to leave the country to change the visitor visa in the UAE Pravasi | Deshabhimani

DUBAI: The law has been re-established that those on visitor visas have to leave the country if they want to change to a new visa following the expiry date. This applies to visas from the emirates of Sharjah and Abu Dhabi. This is not applicable in Dubai. Those who have taken a visit visa from Dubai can renew their visa from here. During the Covid pandemic, the authorities had provided the facility to change visas from within the country.

In-country status change charges are lower for those taking visit visas from the emirates of Sharjah and Abu Dhabi than in Dubai. Visas from the emirates of Sharjah and Abu Dhabi cost much less, while Dubai costs over AED 2,000. The facility of renewing the visa without leaving the country was very useful for many who arrived on a visit visa. Recently there was a law reducing the duration of the visit visa to two months from three months.

But there has been no change in the law for resident visa holders to renew their visas from within the country (inside country status change). With the coming into effect of the law that one must leave the country to change the visa, it will be necessary to leave the country by plane or bus and hit the exit and renew the visa. Many people cross the border of Oman by bus and following hitting the exit, they re-enter the country and renew their visas.
