By bike from New York to Los Angeles – and back on foot: extreme athlete Jonas Deichmann wants to fulfill his very own American dream with the tour.
When Jonas Deichmann rolls off the Brooklyn Bridge in New York, his path doesn’t just lead to Manhattan. The 36-year-old German extreme athlete wants to cycle all the way to Los Angeles on the Pacific – when his bike finally arrives in the USA – and then jog the same route back. He actually wanted to start on Wednesday, but his bike didn’t arrive on time.
Once through the United States – that is Deichmann’s American Dream. The extreme athlete has already crossed several continents by bike. “I’m going to experience more in the next four months than most people will in ten years,” he enthuses.
Deichmann holds several records for crossing continents. In the Guinness Book it stands for the fastest bicycle ride from Portugal to Vladivostok. Tours followed from Alaska to Patagonia, from the North Cape to the Cape of Good Hope in South Africa.
Deichmann finally got more attention with his “Triathlon around the world”, in which he cycled, ran and swam 120 times the distance of the Ironman in a tour around the world. Deichmann’s adventure through the USA is shorter; the logistics will be a challenge for the solo traveler. On the bike he transports his luggage in several bags. He will then pull a trailer behind him on the approximately 100-day running route.
Deichmann says the fact that he doesn’t have a team with him is a big difference from previous tours. But that is part of the adventure of the double US crossing, where he wants to arrive back in New York in November. When he ran through Mexico in 2021, the man with the long beard and the red cap was called the “German Forrest Gump”.
