Long before remote work became so popular or people in big cities preferred to live in small towns, the couple of Eric and Sylvia Hawkins made a radical change in their way of life and decided to leave their home in Virginia Beach, United States, for a simple mobile home. Taking this risk allowed them to cut expenses and start a new business that was an immediate success. As a reward, they now enjoy greater financial freedom.
“Everybody thought we were crazy”, was the first reference made by Eric Hawkins when he recalled the moment in which he and his wife, Sylvia, chose to go live in the mobile home. “It was a completely financial decision,” Eric said in an interview with the site The U.S. Sun. They immediately saw an effect on total mortgage costs and services, such as electricity, water and gas, which more than halved. Now, with US$1,500 a month, they cover everything. “We wanted to prove to ourselves that we might do something different,” added the head of the family.
The Hawkins’ new home on wheels they bought it at a government auction for just $1,500 and even bought two other vehicles for your children. “We got rid of everything,” Sylvia, who had previously worked in a beauty salon, narrated on her own account. “We had a truck that we weren’t using, so anything we didn’t sell right away ended up sitting there because storage fees were going to be an issue.”
The use they gave to the residence they lived in before this change was what allowed them to considerably improve their economic situation and boost their income. The 278 square meter property was published on the Airbnb platform with a price of US$1000 per night and before long guests began to arrive.
During the first year of renting the house, they managed to generate US$80,000 for rentals, which gave them the opportunity to buy another property and so on. “In three years we had 19 Airbnb listings”Eric recounted.
Eric and Sylvia’s story is a test of strategic thinking and good investments. “Instead of having one big house, we now have a bunch of homes. and each one helps us generate income.”
After several years of traveling in their motorhome and managing their rentals remotely, Eric and Sylvia now run the tiny vacation home set called Cape Charles Tiny Livin’, located on the east coast of Virginia, which is also available for hosting weddings and other social events.
“We have been living the minimalist lifestyle for over 14 years and we love it. Although we have reduced travel, we have maintained our efforts to create the perfect getaway in a tiny house for everyone, ”says the section of his story on the website of the accommodation group, where you can stay the night for rates starting at US$156.
