From Masala to Mass Movie: Will Bollywood Show Emotional Movies Now?

Released last week Shahrukh Khan ‘Jawan’ has become the fastest triple century film. After ‘Pathan’ and ‘Ghadar 2’, this is the third Bollywood film to cross the Rs 300 crore mark this year.

At the beginning of this year, Shah Rukh Khan’s film ‘Pathan’ had a record success. Since then people were anxiously waiting for ‘Jawan’.

The first trailer of the film was released in early July, fueling the fire of anticipation. People were constantly speculating regarding the story of the film, Shah Rukh’s character and the use of technology.

According to film pundits, ‘Jawan’ is not a traditional masala film but a ‘mass movie’. Although such films are a regular part of Tamil and Telugu cinema Bollywood This experiment is in its early stages and the latest evidence of its success is young.

The term masala film became popular in Bollywood in the 1970s. Nasir Hussain and Manmohan Desai’s ‘Yaado Ki Barat’ (1973) and ‘Amar, Akbar, Anthony’ (1977) are the best examples of this.

A film in which all kinds of spices including action, comedy, music, romance and drama are mixed and presented in the cinema.

Even today most of the films are made of this type. Coming from Masala Movie to ‘Mass Movie’, there are several stops along the way. The most important of these was the status of cinema in India as an ‘industry’.

In 1998, the National Democratic Alliance gave cinema the status of an industry. From here everything changed, including the form of investment in films and consequently the themes of films.

Earlier, a group of people financed the film on a personal level. Consisting of 15 to 20 people, these entrepreneurs generally provided capital in return for four to five percent monthly interest. Since cinema did not have the status of an industry, there were many obstacles to free investment.

After 1998, investments began to come from large institutions, such as the Industrial Bank of India, which lent money to several films, including Kabhi Vadaa Na Kehna.

It seems that it has become a part of the distant past, when people like Shailinder used to pour their entire life’s earnings into making a film.

Do you remember why Raj Kapoor made ‘Bobby’ (1973)? After that, the next step was to invest on the basis of partnership. No interest but 50% of the total earnings will go to the investor.

The themes of films also changed with the arrival of investment companies. The Angry Young Man films, which told the story of the common man, associated with leftist ideologies and were full of anger once morest the system, became anecdotal.

The middle class hero also started riding in luxury cars. In the eyes of the capitalist, more important than the local people were the identity-crisis Indians living abroad, who were eager to see traditional Indians in a very modern style. Given the large market Hollywood Film studios also turned to Bollywood.

Ranbir Kapoor and Sonam Kapoor are among the most representative young actors of our generation. Both of them got their first break with ‘Sanuria’ (2007). Do you know which production house it was? of Sony Pictures, which was the first Hollywood studio to enter India.

As of 2015, the Indian film industry was a 13 crore rupees market, which has reached 172 billion Indian rupees in 2022.

According to general estimates, this industry will cross the threshold of 230 billion rupees by 2025. Hindi cinema accounts for regarding 45% of its total revenue.

According to experts, the booming industry from a business perspective needs a ‘mass movie’ to move at the same pace that Salman and Shah Rukh’s films are doing.

The film Masala, despite all its absurdity, has a logical sequence. For example, in Dilip Kumar and Amitabh Bachchan’s film ‘Shakti’, the son is on one side of the law and the father on the other. In the middle is the mother who is also the wife.

Everything is connected, albeit in an unrealistic way, there is a sequence, an emotional connection between the characters that can be heard beating in the hearts of the audience sitting in the cinema hall.

The mass movie is free of all such ‘myths’ the latest example being ‘Joan’. In one scene, a man walks out of a prison wearing underwear. Suddenly Deepika Padukone appears and falls in love with Jawan for no reason. Why?

What was the relationship between the two and what happened now? nobody knows. The song starts playing and we get lost in the song at that moment.

Masala movie has an emotional side to the story. You attach yourself to a character. You don’t want to see anyone die, but a mass movie has no emotional basis. You see things in bits and pieces, enjoy and move on.

Today, a film is considered a hit if it does 50 to 60 percent of the business in theaters, with the rest coming from online platforms.

In the past, both stardom and film depended on people coming to the theatres. Why would people buy a cinema ticket when there is no such thing in the story of the film? To see your favorite star.

So only the presence of a big star can make a mass movie a hit. Mass Movie is a crowd puller, it’s doing business.

The capitalist’s problem lies only here. So are we going to lose traditional cinema? Is it normal for one of the best films in the history of Bollywood like ‘Masan’ to flop?

Perhaps we will have to wait for Shahrukh’s next film to answer many questions. ‘Dinky’ is directed by Rajkumar Hirani. His style is totally different from Attlee Kumar.

They give great importance to the story and the emotional struggles of the characters. Will people even value emotional conflict?
