With just over 12 million in his pocket, the Briton from St Leonards-on-Sea, UK, is living the high life. Except that nearly thirty years later, Mark Gardiner has nothing left. Back in June 1995. At that time, Mark Gardiner won the impressive lottery sum of 22,590,829 pounds sterling (regarding 25 million euros). Having played with his partner at the time, Paul Maddison, the Briton shares the winnings and walks away with 11,295,414 pounds sterling, or just over 13 million euros. From there, the one who was boss of his own glazing company in Sussex lives the high life. In particular, he bought the local Hastings football club, bought a house in Barbados and injected more than two million dollars into his company: Croft Glass.
Over the years, bad investments, including the purchase of five houses at €500,000 each for friends, followed one another and from a personal point of view, Mark Gardiner married and divorced four times. Life events, the last of which dates back to 2004, which considerably affect his fortune. In the 2000s, Gardiner said his earnings “had, in a sense, ruined his life.” In 2005, he had notably declared to the British press: “There are days when I curse my victory. His lifeline? Having injected two million euros into his business to develop it. Getting more involved in his company as his personal fortune dwindled kept him grounded. “I decided to invest money in my business because I wanted to see if I had the abilities, skills and knowledge to go further. It was like a test and I passed it, ”explains the sixty-year-old on July 23, 2023 in the columns of the Sun.
“I would have done a lot of different things”
No longer having a penny from his earnings, Mark Gardiner actively resumed his activity as a glazier in the early 2010s. An activity he continues to exercise despite his 61 years. He now spends his days driving his van to do the daily glazing work himself.
However, the entrepreneur tells the English media, not without humor: “Don’t get me wrong, if I had won the lottery at 61, I would have done a lot of different things. I would have stopped working. “Combining words with deeds, Mark Gardiner also announced that he still continued to play the lottery “the same numbers as in 1995, in the hope of a new gain”.
