From Heartbreak to Hope: A Dog’s Healing Journey After Losing Its Beloved Owner

When the staff from Nordjyllands Internat arrived at the address, they were greeted by bottles, rubbish and lots of mess.

Help was therefore needed to take care of the dogs.

– We didn’t know what would meet us when we drove out to collect the dogs. We had spoken to the previous owner’s neighbour, who had looked after the dogs until we took them over, and we therefore knew that they were sweet and sociable, but apart from that we knew nothing, says Karina Fisker, director of boarding at Dyrenes Beskytselse in a press release.

The four dogs – two adults, a 10-month-old puppy and a three-week-old puppy – had clearly been cared for with food and care, but they had not experienced anything in their lives. They were therefore very nervous when strangers suddenly entered their home.

– When we put Lille, as the young dog is called, on a leash and wanted to take her out to the car, she went into shock and lay shaking in the garden, completely glued to the ground. We knew very well that the dogs had probably not experienced much in their lives, but when we were with Lille, it was clear to us that we were faced with a major socialization task, says Karina Fisker in the press release.

However, they eventually succeeded in luring the 10-month-old dog to the car, so that she could be taken to Nordjyllands Internat.

The four dogs were vet checked at the animal shelter in North Jutland to ensure that nothing was wrong. The adult male dog’s knee was completely destroyed and could not be treated, so he had to be euthanized. The remaining dogs were in good physical condition, but all faced intense environmental training.

– We decided quite quickly to send the puppy and its mother into the care of one of our skilled foster families, while we worked with Lille at 10 months at the animal shelter. And I just have to say that she has been surprisingly fast in her development. She is still not ready for adoption, but it is a completely different dog we meet now, says Karina Fisker.

The mother and puppy have also gone through a great development with a foster family, and as soon as the animals are ready for new homes, they will be put up for adoption on the Animal Protection website.
