From Cuba to the world: the electoral farce

Havana Cuba. – A part of the Cubans attended to vote for 470 deputies to the National Assembly of Popular Power with apathy and resignation, brought down by the Committees for the Defense of the Revolution (CDR) to the polling stations. Despite the regime’s intense campaign, approximately 33.8% of voters did not supportor the process, according to the levels of abstention, the numbers of blank and canceled ballots. LTurnout continued to decline compared to the 2022 referendum and, above all, compared to the processes led by Fidel Castro.

According to the preliminary results, he went to the polls el 75.92% of the more than millions of voters. Of the total ballots deposited, 90.28% were valid, 6.22% deposited blank and 3.50% cancelled, according to reported Alina Balceiro Gutiérrez, president of the National Electoral Council (CEN), on March 27. 72.10% were votes “for all”, and 27.90%, selective votes.

In Havana, the streets were empty, without the usual bustle typical of Cubans, especially on Sunday. No buses circulated, the queues disappeared because the stores were closed and the agricultural markets had been helped by the municipal fairs on Saturday. Internet connectivity was affected and cell phones did not have coverage for most users. The whole country had a depressive atmosphere of hopelessness and resignation. Political opponents, independent journalists, and other members of civil society were harassed beforehand and on the 26th by State Security officials.

The previous meetings so that the voters knew their candidates for deputies, especially the presence of Miguel Díaz-Canel in Santa Clara to commit each of his compatriots to vote for him, did not contribute proposals to modify the erratic economic policy known as Sorting Task, and the hundreds of measures and regulations with reinforcement of the obstacles to the producers. The nominees stated that they wanted to listen to the residents, so that they would have a catharsis and convince them that the “blockade” of the United States was the cause of all evils.

“The disrespectful opinions of the United States government slip us by,” he said. Miguel Díaz-Canel leaving the polling station. Nothing to raise production and offers at reasonable prices, nor miserable salaries and pensions, and therefore lower inflation.

Nothing will change in Cuba as a result of the decisions of the National Assembly of People’s Power, which will be constituted with the 470 nominated deputies, supposedly elected by the people, and who will continue to vote unanimously on what was decided by Raúl Castro and the military caste.
