The number of job losses increased by 17.5% compared to last year and by 50% compared to 2022.
During the first 40 weeks of 2024, 8,264 bankruptcies were declared in Belgium and 24,908 jobs lost, show data published Wednesday by the Belgian statistics office, Statbel. This is the highest number of job losses since 2014.
The number of bankruptcies and job losses is increasing. Between January 1 and October 6, corporate courts declared 8,264 bankruptcies, 8.2% more than the same period last year and 18.2% more than in 2022.
At the start of the week, it appeared that 8,878 workers were affected by the announcement of collective layoffs during the first nine months of 2024, according to the latest figures from the Federal Public Service (FPS) Employment. This is the highest number since the administration began compiling quarterly statistics in 2011.
