2011, Buenos Aires, Federal Capital. Rodrigo Fernández Rumi had just turned 18 and had just arrived from his hometown of Victoria, Entre Ríos. His life was that of an inner-city student in the big city, although he was not convinced of what he wanted for his future. “At that time there was no such thing as ‘I’m going to study acting,’” he recalls, who would have wanted to pursue an artistic career from that moment on.

A fan of all Cris Morena products, and with the dream of one day working for her, in his adolescence, Rodrigo signed up for an agency and appeared at every casting call that arose: he got up early, took the bus to Buenos Aires , auditioned and came back. “I wanted to be an actor, at school I was the clown, I liked to make everyone laugh, entertain others. I suppose it has to do with wanting to attract attention,” analyzes the young man in an exclusive interview with Teleshow.

“I showed up, I advanced in the instances but in the end I didn’t stay. “He thought he wasn’t very good,” he says regarding the frustration he felt at that time. That is why when he decided to move to Capital Federal he chose a university career: architecture. “It was more or less what I liked, or so I thought, because I liked to draw.”

Three months later, he heard that Jorge Rial announced the closing of the casting for the next edition of Big Brother. Rodrigo did not hesitate, he took a digital camera, recorded himself and sent the material. Two weeks later they were contacting him to tell him that he had been chosen, and the selection processes began, which he overcame one by one. Until the moment came when “everything got serious,” he remembers: they did medical and psychological studies. He was close, he knew it.

His family was aware, but for them “it was just another casting of all the ones they had been doing.” Furthermore, her mother had not seen the reality show, so she did not fully understand what it was regarding. Her sister, on the other hand, did: Rodrigo and she had followed the previous edition, the one that Cristian U had won.

Rodrigo knew that this was the bridge he needed to rise to fame and thus be able to pursue his dream: to succeed as an actor. Ten days before the start of the pageant, in November of that same year, they called him to announce that he would enter the most famous house in the country.

That edition was the longest in history in Argentina: it lasted 164 days. Time in which Rodrigo earned popular affection and the public wanted him to be crowned winner in April 2012.

What followed next, the young man who is now 29 years old remembers as a “shock”, one of those that are so beautiful that the mind erases them. “It was very strong,” says the person who bought an apartment in Palermo with the money obtained from the prize. He still keeps the property and rents it out temporarily when he is out of the country or in his native Victoria.

He appeared at clubs, met the actors he saw on television and who had become famous peers. “Peter Lanzani didn’t know my name, but he recognized me and greeted me when he saw me,” he highlights regarding the idol with whom he compared himself at the time of Casi Ángeles and with whom he had shared a presence in a bowling alley.

“It was a very chaotic time in my mind and in my head,” he remembers regarding his first weeks outside the most famous house in the country. His presence caused a sensation and job offers poured in: he debuted as an actor and did his first play, and he also had a radio show.

And at the end of that same year, his former reality show partner Victoria Irouleguy invited him to go together to a casting for the series Signals, which was recorded at Estudios Pampa, from where Casi Ángeles was filmed, where Rodrigo longed to go see to his idols, where he wanted to be a part. He was selected and the fiction was broadcast on Public TV and Disney sold it to Italy and Israel. Thus he began his international career. “I had already fulfilled my dream,” highlights Fernández Rumi without yet knowing everything that lay ahead of him.

“Later, madness took hold of me, and I was always very restless. “I had never worked in anything else, I felt like I was kind of useless, and I didn’t know what else I might do in Argentina,” says the actor who then decided to travel to Switzerland to visit the family of a friend of his from Victoria. And what was initially going to be a month-long stay ended up lasting half a year. Her friend’s aunt put an ad in the newspaper in which she said that a young student was looking for a job. And she succeeded immediately: first she cleaned the apartment of two grandparents “who for me more than anything needed company” – she considers – and she also helped a woman pack and unpack boxes for a move. He charged $25 an hour.

Then, they offered him a job on a farm: he would go there by bicycle, feed the animals, clean and prepare the facilities. “I made a lot of money,” recalls someone who bought a state-of-the-art cell phone with those savings. “That showed me that I was not useless, that I might work and save. The thing is that I had never had a regular job, the presences were a theft”, says the person who at that time took acting as a hobby.

In December of that same year he returned to Entre Ríos to spend the holidays with his family. But he knew he wouldn’t stay too long. Furthermore, he no longer had any doubts that he wanted to succeed as an actor. And where did he want to train? Nothing more and nothing less than in Los Angeles, the mecca of cinema. Without hesitation, Rodrigo took out a ticket and flew in February to the city that housed him for the next three years.

He arrived there on a tourist visa and then got the extraordinary talent extension thanks to his time on Big Brother. However, he did not look for work as an actor since to do so he needed the Green Card (permanent resident card of the United States). However, he took advantage of the opportunity to take classes, make new contacts and improve himself. Something that ended up helping him in the future.

Meanwhile, he continued to make money at a bar located in Studio City: he started by cleaning the kitchen and then moved to the living room as a waiter. “It was the experience of my life, since I am a cholulo, I met a lot of celebrities,” he highlights regarding the three years he worked there. When his visa was regarding to expire, they contacted him from Disney Latin America, they had left his profile when he had appeared in a casting for Topa and was not selected. This time they were looking for him for the series Bía, in which he stood out as the villain.

They recorded two seasons over a year and in 2020, when they were regarding to go on tour in Latin America, the world closed due to the coronavirus pandemic and their projects were put on pause. However, Rodrigo did not stay still and found a way to remain active: he became a TikToker and today has almost a million and a half followers. For example, a short time ago he went viral by making a humorous video in which he claimed that Big Brother was “all armed,” something he later denied in his clarification.

Additionally, an American company pays you to hire other influencers and social media personalities to do advertisements or promote events, songs, and so on. He recently just released Lpop, a series that he recorded in Mexico and in which he stars alongside Andrea de Alba and in which he plays a reggaeton singer.

What do you hope for your future? From Miami, where he is visiting friends, he assures that he plans to return to Victoria and stay to spend the holidays and the summer with his family, and in February or March of next year he wants to return to Madrid, where he spent three months this year , since he aims to get a representative and be able to work as an actor. “There are many productions there, in Argentina there are fewer productions and also very talented actors. That’s why I feel that there are more opportunities in Spain,” concludes Rodrigo Fernández Rumi, who is committed to continuing to succeed as an international actor.
