A familiar Alex Reed is coming back to Miltenberg: the musician James Miltenberger and his ensemble will be coming to the Old Town Hall in Miltenberg at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 15 as part of his European tour. The motto this time is »From Bach to Beatles«.
The pianist, who comes from West Virginia in the USA, was last in Miltenberg in 2018. Before leaving for Europe, James Miltenberger spoke to the editors.
Is it a coincidence that Mr. Miltenberger is giving a concert in Miltenberg?
No of course not. In 1983 I wrote to the cultural office in Miltenberg and explained that I was leading a jazz ensemble with which I was touring Europe in 1984 and would like to give a concert in my ancestors’ hometown. Mr. Otto Keller answered at the time – and that’s how it happened that we were able to perform in Miltenberg for the first time 39 years ago.
Your repertoire for the concert in Miltenberg has a wide range from Bach, Blues, Bluegrass to the Beatles?
? yes, that was deliberately chosen. In all the years that we have performed in Miltenberg – and that’s more than ten times – we always wanted to show the whole spectrum of musical styles. It was often the case that ensemble members gave an additional concert with only classical music.
We will open the concert on June 15 in Miltenberg with a Bach Prelude in E flat minor from the »Well-Tempered Clavier« from 1772, followed by a set of pieces composed by our ensemble over the past year. In it we show different styles – bebop, bluegrass, rock and mood music. It can be very exciting for the audience to hear these different styles – which are 300 years apart – so condensed.
30 years ago – in 1993 you released your album »Piano Music of the Americas«. Is there a difference in playing the piano to the European way of playing?
This solo piano CD merely reflects the repertoire of typical American music. Many classical composers incorporate elements of their own culture into their music – whether these are elements of folklore or dance rhythms or other aspects. To that extent it is true that the game itself does not document differences in cultures, but the compositions do.
In Germany we are experiencing a renaissance of piano music in contemporary music, for example with Danger Dan, which comes from the German indie scene and underscores German rock with piano.
That is really good. In my lessons and also in my concerts, I always work towards the fact that all musical styles should be appreciated. That’s why it’s so important to me to have a repertoire in my concerts that reflects the bandwidth of these styles.
Who are your personal favorite composers?
I mightn’t name any names here, but rather add features: namely, those composers who stand by their own culture and use it in their pieces.
