From 467 euros on December 13 to 5 euros per megawatt hour this Friday: how to explain this plunge in the price of Belgian electricity?

Electricity reached low prices at the end of the year, at least on the “spot” market: the average price for “day ahead” delivery (for the following day) was 5.76 euros on December 30, the lowest price recorded in over a year.

This fall in prices is in particular the consequence of very windy weather which favored the production of wind energy, but it is also linked to the fact that many companies are closed during the holidays and therefore do not consume. These conditions combine with mild temperatures.

Wednesday morning, the record for wind energy production in our country had fallen for the first time : 4505 MW of wind energy were produced at 7.15 a.m., the capacity of approximately four nuclear reactors. Since then, this record has continued to be beaten, Wednesday during the day, Thursday and once more this Friday, when 4,526 Megawatts were produced at 12:45 p.m., according to online data from the network manager Elia (out of a maximum total capacity of 5244MW).
