At home, fries are often considered to be a comfort food, which is good for morale when it is at half mast. But according to a new American study, fried foods can, over time, have a negative impact on mental health and even potentially lead to depression. “High consumption of fried foods impacts anxiety and depression due to disturbances in lipid metabolism and neuroinflammation”can we read.

Fried foods are known risk factors for obesity, high blood pressure and other health effects. These results “open a doorway to the importance of reducing the consumption of fried foods for mental health”, according to the study carried out by PNAS. But the study shows other harmful effects of fried foods on health.

The researchers followed 140,728 people for 11.3 years. After excluding participants diagnosed with depression in the first two years, a total of 8,294 cases of anxiety and 12,735 cases of depression were found among those who ate fried foods. The conclusion is clear: subjects who regularly eat fried foods, including fries, have a 12% higher risk of anxiety and a 7% higher risk of depression.

According to the American scientific journal PNAS, the effects on humans would therefore be rather clear. “Constantly, long-term exposure to acrylamide, a contaminant representative of food processing in deep-fried products, exacerbates scototaxis and thigmotaxis, and further impairs the exploratory ability and sociality of fish. -adult zebra, showing anxious and depressive behaviors.”

An expert wanted to qualify the comments of the study. “The human component of this study may indicate exactly what it claims: that a higher intake of fried foods increases the risk of anxiety/depression”said Dr. David Katz, a lifestyle medicine specialist at CNN.

“However, the causal pathway could just as easily go the other way: people with anxiety/depression are turning to ‘comfort food’ with increasing frequency for some semblance of relief”he concluded.
