The environmental protection organization “Fridays For Future Austria” began its mobilization towards the European elections with a day of action on Friday. In Austria, actions were planned in Vienna, Linz, Graz and Innsbruck. “This June the Green Deal is at stake,” said Laila Kriechbaum, spokeswoman for “Fridays For Future Austria”.

“Fridays For Future” announced the climax of the protests in Austria and Germany for May 31st, where people should “fill the streets en masse”. According to the NGO, the European elections would be of crucial importance for the climate movement, “because the EU bears an immense responsibility in the fight against the climate crisis.”

“We as a climate movement will not stand idly by and watch as right-wing populist and extreme right-wing parties destroy the progress of the last few years. The Green Deal was a response to our protests five years ago and must not be the end of European climate policy. Therefore, it is needed “It’s young and old together on the street on May 31st,” said Kriechbaum.

The actions on Friday marked the beginning of the protest. In Vienna, a rally at the Human Rights Square was scheduled to take place from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., and at 2 p.m. a rally in the form of a picnic was scheduled to start at the main square in Linz. In Innsbruck, the demo meeting point was scheduled for 2 p.m. at the main university, and a chalk painting event was planned at the main square in Graz from 3 p.m.

“The climate crisis is unfair, it affects those who least caused it most. That’s why the responsibility lies with Austria and the entire EU to achieve climate neutrality as quickly as possible. Because the fact is: the climate crisis costs human lives every day and climate protection is Human right,” said Klara König, climate activist at “Fridays For Future Austria”.
