Frey and Drmic excited for the World Cup season
Swiss clippers dream of the World Cup!
Six Swiss strikers set an exclamation mark with strong performances! Michael Frey and Josip Drmic are already unstoppable in the first serious fights.
Marco Pescio, Michael Wegmann
The Belgian TV commentator can’t stop raving: “A real top scorer! What ball control. Super efficient!» That hymn of praise? It is addressed to Michael Frey (28), who scored a brace for Royal Antwerp in the first league game once morest Mechelen (2-0).
The striker from Münsingen BE particularly impressed with his 1-0 lead. After taking the ball wonderfully, he dances around an opponent and throws the ball powerfully into the corner.
Frey also says to Blick: “That was one of the most beautiful goals of my career! There’s no better way to start a season.”
He praises the “good and intensive training” under ex-Bayern star Mark van Bommel (45), who has been coaching Antwerp since the beginning of the month. For Frey, he has nothing to lose in the World Cup season. With the double pack at the start, he once once more sent a thick letter of recommendation to the Swiss association and national team coach Murat Yakin (47).
The same applies to Josip Drmic (29) following moving from Rijeka to Dinamo Zagreb. Three games, three goals, one assist across all competitions! “I would even have one more assist. I have no idea why it wasn’t given to me,” says the former FCZ striker, laughing. He already feels very comfortable in the Croatian capital: “And it can go on like this on the pitch.”
Embolo with a dream start in the test
Frey and Drmic are not the only Swiss clippers in early form. Breel Embolo (25) also sets a scent mark in Monaco in the test once morest Porto B – with two goals. Mario Gavranovic (32) snaps for Kayserispor once morest Alanyaspor. And Haris Seferovic (30) delighted Galatasaray fans on his debut in the friendly once morest Kasimpasa with the winning goal to make it 2-1.
And in the Super League, Cedric Itten (25) already has a goal for YB this season. Four months before the World Cup in Qatar, the Swiss strikers are doing a good job of themselves!
