Sun, 28 degrees, bathing weather – that was exactly a year ago. There is now a lot of fresh snow in the mountains. A crazy winter in retrospect.
When winter first showed up, autumn hadn’t even started yet. On September 18, 2022 there were photos of the first snow in Obertauern. A cold front also brought uncomfortable weather conditions down into the valley. On the other hand, October was 4.3 degrees warmer than the long-term average. Snow fell in December, just in time for the start of the season in the ski areas, and then came the warm weather phase that lasted several weeks, a sort of XXL Christmas thaw.
Michael Butschek, meteorologist at GeosphereAustria and head of the Salzburg avalanche warning service, speaks of a “crazy winter”. And he’s not letting up at the moment. Butschek: “In some of the higher areas there is now more snow than the average this year.”
In the SN room, Butschek speaks to experts on Friday evening: For the 23rd time, the avalanche warning service has this year in tour portal called for a photo and contribution competition. Despite the poor snow conditions at times, 349 tour descriptions including 1431 photos were uploaded. In this way, the ladies and gentlemen of the ski touring community make a contribution to alpine safety.
The SN has accompanied this competition from the beginning, with the contributions that have been rated best by a jury and also by the community itself, which are traditionally presented at the end of the season in the SN hall.
Thanks to loyal sponsors, there are also non-cash prizes to be won. For example, touring gloves. You can’t just use them in the high mountains these days. On Wednesday, for example, it was only six degrees plus in the northern lowlands in the morning, and it was even cooler in the inner mountains.
