In a joint initiative, deputies of the Frente Amplio and representatives of the Valparaíso Region have announced the formation of an investigative commission to analyze the management of the National Disaster Prevention and Response Service (Senapred) during the recent megafire that hit the area.
The commission, whose purpose is to examine various aspects related to the response to the catastrophe, will seek to evaluate compliance with deadlines, coordination between Senapred and other organizations such as Conaf and Firefighters, as well as the operation of emergency alarms. In addition, it is intended to obtain a general vision of how the crisis was managed in the region, considering the geography of the affected areas.
Camila Rojas, head of the Frente Amplio bench and member of Comunes, expressed the need for a special session to specifically analyze early aid and first responses. “We know that the Government has been deployed, but we are also clear that things can always be done more quickly and we can respond better to citizens,” she said.
For his part, deputy Jorge Brito, representative of the Democratic Revolution (RD), stressed the importance of reviewing the actions of the emergency institutions regarding this tragedy. Likewise, he urged the Executive to file a complaint for the State’s Internal Security Law, emphasizing the need for justice for the affected communities: “First of all, we want to insist on the importance of the Ministry of the Interior filing a complaint for the Anti-Terrorist Law (…) in defense of life and justice for the communities that were burned last February.”
Meanwhile, deputy Diego Ibáñez (CS) stressed to Emol.cl that “it is important to improve the management of Senapred’s collaboration with the municipalities, to improve the management of resources with the victims, to all the tools at the disposal of early aid, so that boys and girls can return to classes and that, as President Gabriel Boric said yesterday, by winter there will be no family living in tents and everyone will have a roof over their heads. I sheltered them.”
