In the 24th minute, De Jong’s right ankle collapsed in a duel with Unai Gómez. The midfielder might not continue and was taken off the field with a cart.
The 26-year-old De Jong initially tried to walk off the field himself, but he quickly shook his head. The 54-time international took a seat on the cart with a dejected face.
Nothing is yet known regarding the severity of De Jong’s injury. “It doesn’t look good, just like Pedri’s injury,” coach Xavi said followingwards. “I think they’ll be out of circulation for a while.”
The injury might have consequences for his availability in the practice matches of the Dutch national team this month. The Dutch team will play a practice match once morest Scotland in the Johan Cruijff ArenA on March 22. Four days later, national coach Ronald Koeman’s team will play once morest Germany in Frankfurt.

Barcelona fails to take over second place
When De Jong dropped out, the score was 0-0 in the match between Athletic and FC Barcelona. That score ultimately remained on the scoreboard in a match with hardly any shots on target. In addition to De Jong, Pedri was also injured at Barça.
Due to the draw, Barcelona failed to take over second place from Girona, which lost to Real Mallorca (1-0) earlier in the day. The difference between the two teams in the rankings is now one point.
