The International Monetary Fund has just appointed the French, Pierre-Olivier Gourinchas, chief economist and director of studies of the IMF. He replaces Gita Gopinath who becomes number 2 of the institution. Pierre-Olivier Gourinchas is not completely unknown within the IMF since he worked there for several years
The 53-year-old Frenchman is a specialist in macroeconomics and international finance. Originally from Montpellier, graduate of EHESS and Ponts-et-Chaussées, polytechnician, Pierre-Olivier Gourinchas obtained his engineering degree in 1990, then crossed the Atlantic to do his doctorate at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. . The doors of prestigious American universities open before him. For over twenty years he has taught at Berkeley.
Pierre-Olivier Gourinchas knows the Washington institution well since he was for several years the editor-in-chief of his research journal, IMF Economic Review (2009 to 2016). IMF Director Kristina Georgieva praised a specialist in areas essential to the work of this institution, such as capital flows or the stability of the international monetary and financial system.

Pierre-Olivier Gourinchas has, moreover, worked in France, where he carried out research in particular on the euro. He was also a member (2012-2013) of the Economic Analysis Council, an organization attached to the Prime Minister which carries out economic analyzes for the government.
The first mission of the new chief economist of the IMF will be to propose scenarios for exiting the crisis in a context made very uncertain by the upheavals of the pandemic.
