Frenchman Arrested for Driving Onto Terrace in Tournai: Avoiding Tragedy at Fish Market Café

2023-10-01 14:07:00

The driver was arrested. “We avoided the tragedy,” underlined Mr. Delannois (PS).

The events took place shortly following 3:30 a.m., outside a café, along the quay of the Fish Market in Tournai, one of the festive places in the City of Five Bell Towers.

“The municipal regulations require bistro owners to warn their customers at 3:30 a.m. that they can have one last drink and that they have half an hour to drink their drink, before the establishment closes at 4:00 a.m.,” said the mayor.

During closing, unhappy at having to leave the café where he was having a drink with a friend, a Frenchman went to get his car, then drove his vehicle onto a terrace where several people were still seated. Only one customer was slightly injured and required treatment.

“The man was visibly furious at having to leave the scene. With a slight injury, we avoided the tragedy, that’s clear,” said Mr. Delannois.

The driver and his passenger were arrested and deprived of their liberty by the police in the Tournaisis area. The Tournai-Mons area prosecutor’s office was informed of the facts. We did not know on Sunday what action will be taken on this fact by the judicial authorities.
