French Women’s EuroBasket 2023: A Slow Start but a Strong Finish

2023-06-15 20:48:00

On this Thursday, June 15, we already feel like summer with barbecues and the start of international competitions. Because sausages are cool, but today was also the first day of the Women’s EuroBasket 2023 with French women on a gold medal mission. For this, first step once morest Germany, a young and formidable team ready to thwart Les Bleues.

Here for the boxscore!

The start of the match for the French team? The girls spend it stuck in the starting blocks. The three-colored starting five, very young, did not succeed and took a small 0-7 from the families. Les Bleues return following replacements by more experienced players like Valériane Vukosavljevic for example, but stupidly lose balls on placed play. The first quarter is sluggish, the offensive performance demonstrated so far does not resemble what we had seen in preparation matches.

The second period nevertheless started off with a bang for Les Bleues. The defense is back in color and Alexia Chartereau sounds the revolt on the other side of the field with five points in a row including a big 3-pointer at the head of the racket. EDF concedes only seven points in the quarter but still struggled to respond to the Germanic area defense. Iliana Rupert continues the good deeds and ends the first half with a big shot in the corner. Score at the break: 27 to 23 for the French team.

France finally decides to pass the second on the transitions. A little more speed following stealing the balls and the baskets go in more easily. Les Bleues start the second half with an 8-0 but quickly fall back into their traps and, inevitably, Germany returns. The match suddenly becomes more attacking, all supported by the entry of Leila Lacan, already decisive for her first official match in the French senior team.

The Germans manage to come back very close, just a hair’s breadth from the Blues. But the French wake up in defense on the outside lines and sting precious balls once more. The counter-attacks are not all successful but the tricolors regain a larger gap. This momentum is carried by Janelle Salaün, 21, also a neophyte of the Euros in seniors. A big 9-0 chained in the middle of the fourth and the turn is almost folded. Sandrine Gruda takes the hair of the beast and the experience shakes up the young Germans, just what was needed to finish in style and restore hope for tomorrow.

Final score: 58 to 50 for EDF. The victory is there but the performance does not necessarily give a good entry face to this redesigned French team for EuroBasket 2023. To reverse the trend, see you tomorrow from 3 p.m. on beIN Sports 1 for a very physical expected match once morest the UK.

With the heart, with the guts, the Blue will seek a 1st victory in this Euro ????????#PassionatelyBlue #FRAALL pic.twitter.com/aP6bUdebTW
