French Troop Withdrawal from Niger and Rising Tensions in DRC: Latest News Updates in Africa

The withdrawal of French troops stationed in Niger begins this week, the Ministry of the Armed Forces said on Thursday. On September 24, Emmanuel Macron announced the end of military cooperation with Niger, where the military seized power last July. The neighboring countries of Mali and Burkina Faso, also ruled by juntas following coups in recent years, have already secured the withdrawal of French troops.

In the Democratic Republic of Congo, a new rise in tensions in the east of the country. Clashes have been reported since Monday in Masisi territory following several weeks of calm. The Congolese army had recently denounced the redeployment of M23 rebels in several localities in North Kivu which they had left in the past. The rebels accuse the army of attacking their position and violating the ceasefire.

In Senegal, farmers generally work 3 months out of 12, only during the rainy season. A dependence on wintering which makes them vulnerable in the event of a poor harvest for the remaining 9 months of the year. In 2022, the poor agricultural campaign for peanuts, the country’s main cash crop, was hard hit by farmers in Kaolack, a town in the center-west of the country. To prevent such a situation from repeating itself, they set their sights on watermelon, to diversify their crops.
