The French Tech is currently going through a period of economic instability. However, despite these upheavals, certain players in the sector continue to see their salaries increase, thus illustrating the diversity of trajectories within this innovative community. A exclusive study carried out by Figuresa company specializing in the aggregation of salary data for start-ups in Europe, relayed by Les Échos, on November 13, 2023, reveals an interesting trend. In the bootstrapping sector, the financial director recorded the strongest salary growth, with 30% increasebringing its median salary to 149 000 euros. The operations director and the human resources director, also working in companies in the start-up phase, know salary increases of 28% and 26% respectively. For series B companies and beyond, it is the technical director who stands out with a 17% increase in his median salary, reaching 160,000 euros. Compliance-related positions see green
Regarding the areas of activity within start-ups, the compliance-related positions stand out in terms of remuneration, with a median salary of 71,000 euros. This trend is explained by the proliferation of regulations in the field of technology, such as the DSA (Digital Services Act) and the DMA (Digital Markets Act), aimed at strengthening consumer protection. Other regulations, including the IA Act and the Data Act, are in the works, not forgetting sector-specific legislation such as MiCA for the crypto industry. As a result, some start-ups now devote larger budgets to compliance than to research and development (R&D).

Another factor affects remuneration within French Tech: the location of employees. Regional employees earn on average 14% less than their Parisian counterparts, a difference that has remained stable for two years. Furthermore, the Covid-19 pandemic has caused a notable development. Employees stationed in Paris now benefit from an average remuneration 7.1% higher than those working completely remotely, compared to 5.3% in 2022. Start-ups are rationalizing salaries, a consequence of the economic challenges of post-Covid.
