“French-speaking universities exceed quota for doctor production in 2029”

In 2029, French-speaking universities will be able to put around 1,000 doctors “on the health market”. This is almost double what is officially expected in 2027. For its part, Flanders feels aggrieved and questions the quota system.

Mille four hundred and eighty-two doctors in 2027, 1,848 in 2028, 2,073 in 2029… The quotas which gave cold sweats to several generations of candidate doctors are not yet ancient history… On the other hand, we have to recognize that the lament of the field has finally been heard. These figures are those of the “Medical Supply Planning Commission” responsible for adjusting the long-term demand and supply of health care. Each year, it submits to the federal government an opinion on the maximum number of doctors who, at the end of their six-year study cycle, will be able to receive an Inami number (the sesame to practice medicine).
