The New Factory – A key subject for quantum technologies is that of their industrialization, of the transition from research to industry. What regarding in France?
Alain Aspect – When I was young, the dominant discourse was that if you do basic research, you shouldn’t get your hands dirty in the applications. Then there was a shift. I place it at the time when Laurent Fabius, then minister, explained that without application, there was no tax to pay for basic research. From there, I explained to my students that if they had a good idea for an application, it was good to go for it. Result: when they decided to launch start-ups ten or twenty years later, they asked me to accompany them.
