Gabriel Attal, the current French Prime Minister, has announced that he will submit his resignation to the President of the Republic, Emmanuel Macron. This decision came following his party came second in the elections for the French National Assembly on July 7, if official polls are correct. “Tonight, the political group that I represented in this campaign did not obtain a majority, and tomorrow morning I will submit my resignation to the President of the Republic,” he declared.
The decision to accept or not to resign ultimately rests with Macron, who might ask him to hold on to his post until a replacement arrives. “I will never resign myself to the fact that millions of our citizens have chosen to vote for the extremes. To the French people I say: I respect each and every one of you. Some lives are more difficult than others, and it is those lives that we must improve. Wherever I am, I will always be committed to fulfilling this objective.”
Official polls have left Emmanuel Macron and Gabriel Attal’s party Juntos with between 150 and 170 seats. A result that puts the President of the Republic well ahead of expectations and that would even make it possible for Attal to be re-elected as Prime Minister.
However, to do so, Macron will have to negotiate with the New Popular Front, an ally during the elections following the decision to withdraw candidates from many constituencies if they had come third, in order to unite their votes once morest Marine Le Pen and the National Rally (RN).
