An investigation was opened Monday in France for threat of crime or misdemeanor against an elected official, after the discovery of a fingertip in a letter received at the Elysée, the residence of the French president, indicated Thursday a police source and the Paris prosecutor’s office.

According to a source familiar with the matter, the fingertip belongs to the author of the letter who signed it. He would suffer from psychiatric disorders.

Asked, the French presidency did not respond immediately.

The morbid discovery was made by employees of the Presidency of the Republic, who warned the police, according to the magazine Valeurs Actuelles, which revealed this information.

1,000 to 1,500 postal letters and emails are sent to President Emmanuel Macron every day. They are read and scanned by a team of 70 employees, whose offices are not located inside the Elysée Palace.

Emmanuel Macron keeps an eye on this correspondence, seen as a sample of public opinion, and he sometimes responds personally to certain messages.
