The three French players involved in the qualifications for the Masters 1000 in Rome had won their first round on Monday. Two will see the final table. They are Arthur Fils (119th in the world) and Alexander Muller (100th). The first took over Alexander Shevchenko (93rd), 6-3, 6-4. The second swept Franco Agamenone (170th), 6-0, 6-1. Hugo Grenier (124th), who was coming out of a third round in Madrid, however missed the boat once morest Yannick Hanfmann (6-4, 6-4).
The French were less up to par: Elsa Jacquemot (174th) was curtly taken out by Arantxa Rus (86th), 6-1, 6-3. And Océane Dodin (99th) lost (6-3, 6-4) to Camila Osorio (100th).
