Denis Shapovalov was eliminated in the third round of the French Open by losing 6-1, 6-4, 6-2 to tournament favorite Carlos Alcaraz on Friday.

Apart from two advances that he might not hold in the second set, the 24-year-old Canadian did not worry the world No. 1, at the top of his form on clay, in their first career confrontation.

Alcaraz will face in the round of 16 the Italian Lorenzo Musetti, 17th seed, who defeated the Briton Cameron Norrie (14).

Shapovalov committed too many unforgivable unforced errors early in the game once morest the No. 1 that he was broken from the start twice in a row. The Ontarian only gave his rival a bit of a hard time in the fifth game by going for a 40-40 tie but Alcaraz did not flinch. Shapo then made the right adjustments and saved two set points to hold on to his serve and regain a bit of a smile by avoiding being shut out, but the Spaniard completed the job immediately followingwards at the score of 6-1.

Shapo finally got into the match in the second set earning his first serve not without difficulty. Leading 40-15, he then faced another break point but managed to get away with being solid at the net. Then the next game, Shapovalov went for a first break on his fifth opportunity.

A 2-0 lead which he however wasted by being broken in turn following three double faults during the same game. He quickly recovered by obtaining his second break of the set to eventually lead 4-1, but once more let slip his lead to find himself at the foot of the wall in the third set. From there, Alcaraz was intractable.

Shapovalov took part in the third round of Roland-Garros for the first time in his career.
