The National Music Center reveals that music in French is exported more abroad, with a clear domination of rap.

Aya Nakamura, Angel, Short… The National Music Center (CNM) has unveiled the figures for the export of music in French to the world and the market is booming. The number of titles exceeding 500,000 sales, and therefore eligible for the “export certification” increased in 2022, reaching the number of 63. First in this ranking, the Belgian Stromae saw his single Hell downloaded more than 75 million times abroad, thus becoming the biggest French-language success of 2022. In a press release, the CNM welcomed that the language “no longer be a barrier to export” and that French is now present in “68% of new certified for export. »

The National Music Center also counts 326 certified titles and albums made by French speakers, but not necessarily sung in French.

Among the big sellers abroad, Angèle also comes at the top of the list. Recently on the bill of the prestigious Coachella Festival, the Belgian has counted several million plays on Ninety-Five, his last album published in 2021. Alongside Angèle, the French Aya Nakamura is also one of the biggest sales abroad. The R&B singer had several big hits in 2022, with the singles Quickdraw et Bobo. For the first time, rap “dominates international sales”, registering an increase of 38% for new certified artists. The champions are called Gazo, Ninho, Damso, Niska, or even Orelsan. Electro is on the decline even if “the performances of artists of this genre remain among the most impressive and the most international”, indicates the CNM, with in particular Ofenbach and Antoine Chambe as representatives.

The CNM identifies digital and video as the main vectors of music in French abroad. For the National Center for Music, Christophe Maé is one of the rare artists “carrying out more physical than digital export sales”.
