A high-level athlete registered with the French Sailing Federation, Gaspard Petit was raised in Guyana. A great hope in kitesurfing, the 18-year-old young man met students from a CM2 class in Matoury on December 22. An operation led by the inspection of the Guyane EPS academy.

At the Jacques Lony school in Matoury, in a CM2 class, the atmosphere was both recreational and informative on this last day before going on vacation. The students were gathered around Gaspard Petit, the great hope of French kitesurfing. A top athlete who came to tell his children regarding his journey and teach them some of the basics of his sport.
An initiative which is led by the academic inspector in EPS.

“The exchange with the students in a CM2 class was an enriching experience for everyone. I am very surprised by their maturity despite their young age. The questions, prepared in advance with their teacher, revealed a real interest and curiosity regarding the life of a top athlete. I am very touched by this interest in me and I thank them. »

And to continue:

« Through a question/answer game, I discovered that many people knew my sport, thanks to the activities of the kitesurfing clubs on Rémire Montjoly beach. They gave me drawings that represented a kitefoiler. This served as a basis for discussing my discipline: the equipment, the operating principles, the competitions. By responding to each and every one, I hope to have aroused interest in the taste for sport and convey the values of Olympism : friendship, respect, excellence that is shared on the sports fields but also at school. »

Gaspard Petit remains focused on his sporting objectives while preparing for his professional future:

“I am starting my second year in Montpellier. I graduated from high school last summer. Currently, I am in BPJEPS GADA training at CREPS to become a kitesurfing instructor. At the same time, I continue training with the Mauguio Carnon hope center. The sports season resumes in mid-January with the European Youth Championships in Spain. The 2024 season promises to be intense. For your information, I am the only high-level Guyanese competitor registered with the French Sailing Federation and among the top 5 of the best young French people, 4 are from the Antilles Guyana basin (Martinique, St Martin, Guadeloupe and Guyana). »

Being a high-level athlete also means learning patience and knowing how to gain strength according to your potential. Gaspard Petit, despite his qualities, is not yet ready for the top level. We will have to wait for the 2028 Olympics:

“I will not be part of the Olympic selection for the year 2024 in Paris. For the moment, the seniors are very strong, but we, the young people, are just behind waiting for the next Olympics in 2028 in Los Angeles. The real objective is there. However, I will participate as a voluntary volunteer in these Olympics and I will be on the water in Marseille, where all the sailing competitions will take place, on the boats of the race committee. »
