They are accused of having participated, from May to October 2022, in a illegal immigration network which smuggled migrants of Tunisian, Algerian, Afghan and Syrian origin from Hungary to Austria in utility vehicles preceded by an opening car. “Once in Austria, illegal migrants might disperse more easily in Europe, in particular by using rail transport“, detailed the prosecution.

Crossing the border between Hungary and Austria was only part of the activities of this network, which was structured around 12 members and supported around 250 migrants by managing the stages of their journey through Europe. Three of the individuals implicated in Créteil held the role of organizers, two others were drivers and a sixth was responsible for transferring the proceeds of the traffic.

The Office for the Fight once morest the Smuggling of Migrants (OLTIM) opened an investigation last October under the direction of the Créteil public prosecutor’s office, in cooperation with the Austrian and Hungarian judicial authorities. The six suspects were arrested and taken into custody earlier this week.

They are all prosecuted for aiding the illegal entry, movement or stay of a foreigner in the Schengen area. Five of them are also being prosecuted for criminal association, an offense punishable by ten years in prison.

The Hungarian and Austrian police services for their part previously convicted and imprisoned five other French nationals, including four from Val-de-Marne, who belonged to this same network.
