French Guiana: five cases of dengue fever confirmed, Public Health alert France

There are different types of symptoms for this disease. The dengue “classic” manifests abruptly following 2 to 7 days of incubation with the appearance of a high fever often accompanied by headache, nausea, vomiting, joint and muscle pain and a rash resembling that of measles . After 3 to 4 days, a brief remission is observed, then the symptoms intensify, conjunctival hemorrhages, nosebleeds or bruises may occur, before regressing rapidly following a week. Healing is accompanied by a fortnight’s convalescence.

“Classic dengue fever, although very debilitating, is not considered a severe disease like dengue hemorrhagic fever”, however, reports the Pasteur Institute. However, for some cases, the complications can be a little more severe, even fatal. The haemorrhagic form of the disease, which accounts for around 1% of dengue fever cases worldwide, is extremely severe: fever persists and multiple haemorrhages, including gastrointestinal, skin and cerebral haemorrhages, often occur.
