Aafter an Olympic and Paralympic summer who excited the worldFrance was waiting for the effective installation of a new government, the Paris 2024 Games having constituted a sort of political truce following the dissolution of the National Assembly and the calling of early legislative elections resulting in an unprecedented fragmentation of the lower house of parliament.

Also, after appointing Michel Barnier – who was a key player in the organisation of the 1992 Albertville Winter Games – the Head of State has studied in recent days the proposals formulated by the former European negotiator during the BREXIT sequence, to finally decide on the establishment of a large government whose composition was revealed this Saturday, September 21, 2024.

Among the entrants, it is worth noting the appointment of Gil Avérous, 51 years old, to the post of Minister of Sports, Youth and Community Life.

Benefiting from a fully-fledged Ministry, recovering the prerogatives around youth and community life, but losing the reference to the Olympic and Paralympic Games even as France prepares to organize the winter edition of 2030, the Mayor of Châteauroux succeeds Amélie Oudéa-Castéra who has held the ministerial position since May 20, 2022.

In view of the Paris 2024 Summer Games, Gil Avérous was one of the territorial interlocutors of the Organizing Committee (COJO), due to his position at the head of the city where the hosting of the Olympic shooting events and the Paralympic para-shooting competitions was confirmed in 2022.

Earlier this month, on his social networks, the man whose profile as a local elected official is not unlike that of Thierry Braillard or of Patrick Kanner who were in charge of Sports under the presidency of François Hollande, welcomed the arrival of Michel Barnier at the head of the government in these terms:

I extend my congratulations to Michel Barnier, our new Prime Minister.

As President of the Association Villes de France and Mayor of Châteauroux, I am sure that we will have constructive discussions for the territories and medium-sized towns that make up our country.

The recovery of the country can only be achieved with the help of local elected officials, particularly mayors.

I extend my warmest regards and thank Gabriel Attal for the quality of our discussions and his constant listening..

The two men will now have to manage the legacy of the Paris 2024 Games, the success of which has been recognised, while ensuring state support for the French Alps 2030 Olympic and Paralympic project.

Because if the French candidacy was selected by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to host the 2030 Olympic Games during the 142nd Session, on July 24, The Lausanne (Switzerland) institution, however, made the effectiveness of this choice conditional on the delivery of the guarantee signed by the French Prime Minister..

Now in place, Michel Barnier must imperatively sign the said guarantee in the coming days to avoid seeing the IOC withdraw the organization of the Games from France, which would necessarily be a blot on the success of Paris 2024 and which could also impact the candidacy of David Lappartient, President of the French National Olympic and Sports Committee (CNOSF), today engaged in the succession of Thomas Bach at the head of the institution with the five rings.
