The 109 firefighters who arrived in Roberval have already begun their work to help SOPFEU teams fight forest fires.
The French contingent was split into two groups: a first which was deployed in Chibougamau and a second near Saint-Félicien, Dolbeau-Mistassini and La Doré.
Despite some technical differences, French sappers adapt well to the reality of working on Quebec soil.
“You have an advantage is that you still have cool nights here. So in the morning there are opportunities; we get up early and we can attack the fire, which is not necessarily the case in the south of France”, mentioned to TVA Nouvelles the French firefighter Éric Flores.
The fact that French firefighters and those from Quebec speak the same language also helps to facilitate collaboration.
“Even if we all speak English, it’s easier. We have the words easily and we have a spontaneity to use the same language”, mentions Éric Flores.
French firefighters will be deployed for a total of 21 days in Quebec.
