French Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire expressed his hope that Tesla would build a factory in France, following President Emmanuel Macron, CEO of the company, courted the billionaire electric car industry, Elon Musk.
These statements came following Musk’s visit to France last May and June, when he was looking for a site that would house a Tesla factory. Le Maire said it was not clear if he would build a car or battery factory.
Tesla invests in France
Le Maire said, during an interview on “LCI” television, saying: “There are several options on the table, but I hope that Musk will invest in France. He has taken up this matter on several occasions with the President of the Republic. And I spoke to him. He knows he is welcome in France.”
Le Maire noted that one of the obstacles in this regard in France is that there are not enough industrial sites available with rail or sea networks, in addition to a sufficient carbon-neutral electricity supply to operate the factory.
“These sites will become very rare, very expensive, and hard to find,” he added. He pointed out that the problem resulted from the success of some regions in establishing new industrial operations.
Besides, he said, “We have fulfilled all the conditions to be the most attractive country, and we have been able to radically change the image of France economically in the world for nearly seven years.”
