French figure skater Adang Xiaoyingpa (22) showed off a ‘backflip’ at the 2024 International Skating Union (ISU) Figure Skating European Championships. It was a clean success, but he received a big deduction. This is because backflips are prohibited techniques and points are deducted even if successful.

Xiaoyingpa received a total score of 182.04 points in the men’s single free skating competition held in Kaunas, Lithuania on the 13th (Korean time), adding 97.03 technical points, 88.01 artistic points, and 3 deduction points.

Xiao Yingfa’s game that day became a hot topic more for his backflip attempt than for the result. Xiao Yingfa performed a backflip, turning backwards in the air and landing on both feet. After successfully completing the technique cleanly, he continued with other movements. The audience cheered.

Xiaoyingpa was deducted 2 points for a backflip. The ISU banned this technique a long time ago due to concerns regarding athlete injuries, and even if it succeeds, points are deducted.

However, in figure skating, backflips are more than just a ‘banned technique’. Black figure skater Shirya Bonali has become a ‘symbol of resistance’.

In the figure skating world of the 1990s, Bonaly was criticized for not being graceful because she was not the thin white athlete that judges expected. He showed more spin and used higher techniques than others, but this did not lead to scores.

Bonali broke the taboo and performed a backflip at the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan. It would be his last Olympic performance due to a ruptured Achilles tendon. Bonaly confronted the referee by conveying the message, ‘It’s not backflips that should be banned, it’s racism.’

Xiaoyingfa did not attach any serious meaning to her backflip. In an interview with the ISU following the competition, he said, “I knew that I would get points deducted if I did a backflip, but I wanted to use that technique to advance the figure skating world,” and added, “In fact, the backflip is a less dangerous technique than you think.” He then said, “I also wanted to perform for the audience,” and “This is the French style.”

Meanwhile, Xiaoyingfa won the championship despite being deducted from the backflip. It was a comfortable victory with a whopping 19.18 points difference from second place. Xiaoyingpa won the European Championships for two consecutive years following last year.
