French Elections in Rai, Roberto Sergio Dismantles the Left’s Accusations –

Marco Zonetti

Roberto Sergio, CEO of Rai, goes on the counterattack. With public television accused by many (PD, M5S, unions, editorial board of RaiNews24 and so on) of not having covered the second round of the French elections, and of having “hidden” the data because it was favorable to the left and not the right, Sergio responds point by point in a letter to the president of the Rai Supervisory Commission, Barbara Floridia, providing data and numbers. First of all, the CEO of Rai states that Tg1, Tg2 and Tg3 have dedicated a large part of the evening editions to the French legislative elections; with an additional special of Tg3 by Mario Orfeo broadcast in the late evening on Rai3 when the polls close. Thus refuting the point of Senator Floridia, according to which no specials had been made on the 3 generalist Rai networks. Roberto Sergio also specifies that the state television has dedicated over 9 hours of information, which have obtained a coverage of almost 20 million viewers, only with regards to the generalist news. Audience to which must be added that of RaiNews24, the Rai radio channels, and the rainews.it portal. The Rai all-news channel directed by Paolo Petrecca dedicated, for its part, a one-hour special to the French runoff, with Italian and French guests; and overall – from 6 pm on Sunday 7 July until 6 am on Monday 8 – 44.6% of the news on the electoral round beyond the Alps.

Roberto Sergio also illustrates that Rai’s information on the 2024 elections was superior to that which Mario Draghi’s Rai, led by CEO Carlo Fuortes and President Marinella Soldi, dedicated to the 2022 French presidential elections. According to data from CEO Sergio, Rai’s information coverage was in line with or even superior to that of other European public broadcasters, with the exception – obviously – of French channels. Ultimately, according to Sergio’s clarifications, public television dedicated more space to the French elections than French public television dedicated to the Italian political elections of September 2022. If the left claimed that “TeleMeloni” had deliberately ignored the outcome of the French elections – this is the message that emerges from Roberto Sergio’s response – these data paint a diametrically opposite situation. CEO Sergio also sent a second letter to Rai President Marinella Soldi, who had deplored days ago the lack of coverage of the French elections by the radio and television company he heads. Sergio complains that the president would have based her statements on the statements of “some competing national newspapers”, thus causing “reputational damage” to the company.
