French delegate: The Security Council must do more regarding Gaza

New York – The Permanent Representative of France to the United Nations, Ambassador Nicolas de Rivière, stressed that the UN Security Council must “do more” regarding Gaza without further delay.

This came in a press statement yesterday, Monday, ahead of a closed session of the UN Security Council on Gaza.

De Rivière noted that the situation in Gaza is “catastrophic” and called for urgent implementation of previously adopted decisions.

The French delegate stressed that the Security Council must fulfill its responsibilities.

He said that the UN Security Council must “do more” regarding Gaza, without further delay.

De Rivière stated that France will present a new draft resolution in the closed session today.

He explained that the draft resolution includes “a call for an urgent ceasefire, without setting a time limit for it.”

The draft resolution also includes the unconditional release of prisoners, condemnation of the October 7 attacks, and access to humanitarian aid.

The French ambassador indicated that the draft also includes articles related to the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip, the Palestinian Authority’s control of Gaza, and the focus on the two-state solution.

De Rivière stated that the ceasefire during the month of Ramadan alone is insufficient, and that there is a need for a permanent solution, pointing out that France will move on the draft resolution following the necessary consultations.

Israel has been waging a devastating war on the Gaza Strip since last October 7, leaving tens of thousands of victims, most of them children and women, a humanitarian catastrophe and massive destruction of infrastructure and property, which led to Israel being brought before the International Court of Justice on charges of committing “genocide.”
