French cyclist Julien Bernard has been fined 200 Swiss francs ($223) by the International Cycling Union (UCI) following making an affectionate gesture to his wife.
According to local media, the cyclist stopped to kiss his wife during the seventh stage of the Tour de France time trial.
The UCI argued that Bernard’s behaviour was “inappropriate” and had damaged the image of the sport.
Fifteen minutes into Friday’s time trial in Bernard’s home region of Burgundy, he paused to kiss his partner and young son, who were standing on the road with a group of family and friends, Reuters reported.

“I really accept this fine. I will pay it and I hope that this is the end of this story and we will stop talking regarding it,” said the Lidl-Trek team rider at the start of the 8th stage in central-eastern France.
In a television interview, Bernard said that meeting his loved ones had been a unique moment in his career. “It was really amazing. My wife has been organising it with some friends for a few weeks and she has done a really, really good job,” he said. “In a time trial, you have time to enjoy. It’s those moments that keep me going and keep pedalling.”
