French Champagne: New variety after 90 years

The varieties established by law in 1930 for the production of champagne are Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier, while some other rarer varieties are also used: arbane, petit meslier, pinot blanc and pinot gris.

After more than 90 years of adherence to tradition, an eighth variety has now been added, adapted to the needs of the times. This is voltis, which comes from a new generation of hybrid vines and was developed to resist fungal diseases that are affecting wine production around the world as the climate changes.

As noted by the “Times” report, Hugo Drappier’s family has been making champagne in Urville, Central France for more than 200 years, and their company, “Maison Drappier”, is the first producer in the region to cultivate in addition to the seven conventional varieties and the new one.

“It’s a first step towards the future,” says Drapier, adding that “this year, climate change, in addition to higher temperatures, has also brought excessive rains.” High humidity increases the risk of diseases that can destroy the harvest, but Voltis has been developed to resist fungal pests.
