INTERNATIONAL – « In the name of our common humanity », the world of French culture is mobilizing. This Monday, October 23, 93 French artists signed a column in the newspaper Humanity in favor of peace between Israelis and Palestinians following the resurgence of the conflict since the beginning of October.

Among them, we find in particular the actress Adèle Haenel, the actors Swann Arlaud, Reda Kateb and Jean-Pascal Zadi, the Nobel Prize-winning author Annie Ernaux, the actor and screenwriter Arthur Harari, the director Céline Sciamma or the latest winner of the Palme d’Or Justine Triet.

« We come together as artists in the face of ongoing tragedy. We are shocked by the loss of so many precious lives in Israel/Palestine. And we are witnesses to it », They begin by writing in reaction to the unprecedented attack by Hamas on October 7.

And if the few hundred artists gathered around this cause condemn with the same magnitude “ war crimes » you Hamas et you « Israeli government “, they ask to ” end » to this bloodshed which has already caused the death of at least 1,400 people in Israeli territory and more than 5,000 on the Palestinian side, not counting the hostages.

However, the column published this Monday adds that “ decades of occupation deprive Palestinians of their fundamental rights and freedoms “, which raises fears of a ” new catastrophic injustice ” Who ” would, as a bonus, move away from the possibility of a just and lasting peace, security for the two peoples ».

For this reason, Juliette Binoche, Melha Bedia, Éric Cantona and Lyna Khoudri support a call “ for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire to save as many lives as possible and allow humanitarian aid to reach the people of Gaza who desperately need it ».

They also position themselves in favor of a “ release of all hostages held in Gaza » by Hamas and respect for the “ international law, which prohibits harm to civilians, whatever the context “. Before concluding with a sentence full of meaning: “ We will never be free until we are all free ».
