In a spirit of continuity, Pierre-Olivier Beckers-Vieujant was appointed head of the Coordination Commission for the 2030 Winter Games which will take place in the French Alps, after having chaired the body responsible for supervising the preparations for the Paris 2024 Summer Games.
Ahen the timetable for preparations for the 2030 Winter Games offers event organizers a window of less than six years, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) does not intend to waste time.
Also, after the delivery of the State guarantee – or guarantee of delivery of the Games – signed by the hand of the French Prime Minister, Michel Barnier, last weekthe Lausanne (Switzerland) institution announced in a press release the appointment of Pierre-Olivier Beckers-Vieujant as president of the Coordination Commission for the 2030 Olympic Games.
The leader – former President of the Belgian Interfederal Olympic Committee (COIB) – benefits here from the renewed confidence of the President of the IOC, after successfully leading the work of the Paris 2024 Games Coordination Commission.
Moreover, as Thomas Bach pointed out in a laudatory statement:
Pierre-Olivier Beckers-Vieujant’s knowledge, insight and leadership skills will be invaluable to the French Alps 2030 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.
His experience of Paris 2024, his in-depth understanding of the French governance system and the relationships he has built in recent years, both in France and internationally, make him the ideal person for this position..
With the President of the Coordination Commission appointed, all the members of the said Commission still need to be installed.
For this, the IOC is waiting to report the establishment of the Games Organizing Committee (COJO) which must now take place by the end of 2024 or at the very beginning of 2025, knowing that the usually set deadline is six months following the attribution of the Games.
For the moment, the regional executives involved in the adventure of the 2030 Olympics – Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes and Provence-Alpes-Côte-d’Azur – and the French sports authorities have not yet determined the identity of the person or of the one who will embody the COJO in the years to come.
If the name of Martin Fourcade – the most successful French athlete in Olympic history – comes up regularly, political control around the French Alps 2030 project could ultimately have an impact on the appointment of the President of the OCOG and the composition of the organizing body of the Games.
