With six para-sports registered for the 2030 Winter Games, the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) has chosen continuity since the PyeongChang 2018 edition.
L’IPC recently approved the sports program for the 2030 French Alps Paralympic Winter Games.
Meeting on October 2, the Steering Committee of the Paralympic institution thus ratified the place of para-ski alpinof para-biathlonof cross-country para-skiof para-ice-hockeyof para-snowboard and finally chair curling.
These six para-sports present since the PyeongChang 2018 edition obviously constituted a solid basis for the IPC, knowing that beyond the four International Federations wishing to remain represented at the Games – Fédération Internationale de Ski et de Snowboard (FIS), International Biathlon Union (IBU), World Para Ice Hockey, and World Curling – the International Bobsleigh and Skeleton Federation (IBSF) also applied without obtaining the green light from the Paralympic institution.
The choice of continuity for the IPC comes after an in-depth examination of the proposals submitted since January 2024.
As IPC President Andrew Parsons said:
We are extremely pleased to confirm the six para-sports that will form the sports program for the 2030 French Alps Winter Paralympic Games.
As shown in previous editions of the Paralympic Winter Games, these six sports offer high-level competition representing the pinnacle of para-sport and a profound force in highlighting the talent of athletes, which is very bodes well for the future of the Paralympic Winter Games.
We look forward to working with all International Federations to prepare for the organization of the 2030 Games.
From now on, the IPC and Games stakeholders will work together to expand the sports program, with discussions around the disciplines and events to be included in the 2030 Paralympic Games which are scheduled to take place from March 1 to 10, 2030.
As part of the upcoming edition of Milan-Cortina 2026, the IPC announced in August 2023 the organization of 79 events, including a new addition, namely mixed doubles in armchair curling.
Note also that the Milan-Cortina 2026 Games will be held in the presence of a maximum of 665 para-athletes, including 176 women.
If this overall contingent is reached, the Italian edition would then become the largest in the history of the Winter Paralympic Games in terms of the number of participants, knowing that the record is currently held by PyeongChang 2018 with 564 participants, just ahead of Beijing 2022 and its 558 registrants.
