Ln July 24, 2024, two days before the Opening Ceremony of the Paris 2024 Games which marked the return of France to the concert of Olympic hosts, members of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) attended at the final presentation of the French candidacy for the 2030 Olympicsbefore deciding in favor of awarding the said Games to the French Alps.

But even having collected a large majority of votesthe French file was selected subject to the provision of the State guarantee, otherwise considered as the guarantee of delivery of the Games.

Or, due to the calling of early legislative elections a few weeks earlier and the absence of a Prime Minister in office – Gabriel Attal being then resigning Head of Government – this necessary guarantee could not be delivered to the Olympic institution on time. Also, when the 2030 Olympics were awarded, the IOC took care to specify a strict timetable within which the provision of the guarantee signed by the future Prime Minister should be included.

Today, the institution in Lausanne (Switzerland) is awaiting the provision of the precious document.

This document – to be transmitted by October 1, 2024 – will formalize on paper the State’s commitment to supporting the development and putting into orbit of the Olympic and Paralympic project of the French Alps for 2030, knowing that the French Parliament must subsequently approve this commitment by March 1, 2025.

As the IOC President, Thomas Bach, mentioned on the sidelines of the decision on the attribution of the Games:

We are witnesses to the full commitment of the President of the Republic and the Presidents of the two Regions.

We are now in a situation where, on the one hand, we have full confidence in our French friends, and on the other hand, we have the responsibility to ensure the delivery of the Winter Olympic Games in the interests of the athletes and all stakeholders.

After careful discussions with the French authorities, the IOC Executive Commission has come to the conclusion that the best solution for this extraordinary situation is a conditional election..

Appointed by Emmanuel Macron to lead the government earlier this month, Michel Barnier is an expert in the workings of the Olympic machine.

Co-president alongside Jean-Claude Killy of the Organizing Committee for the Albertville 1992 Games, the man who was subsequently an influential European leader is convinced by the French ambition for 2030.

In mid-September, he had also announced an upcoming meeting with the project leaders, while a meeting with his former sidekick was held these days without the content of the discussions having been revealed.

As revealed « Ski Chrono »ski magazine published by “The Dauphiné Libéré”Jean-Claude Killy was the first non-political visitor to the new host of the Hôtel de Matignon.

There is no doubt that the question of the 2030 Olympics was on the agenda of this summit meeting, especially considering the attachment of the two men to the issue of the mountains and the Games, and also taking into account the tight schedule such as mentioned previously.

The case of Val d’Isère must certainly also have been at the heart of the discussions, the famous station has not yet been integrated formally included in the 2030 Olympic Games, unlike its neighborsCourchevel and Méribel which share the orchestration of the alpine skiing events for the men’s and women’s sections.
