The ship is stable and the fire is under control, said the boss of the salvage company Boskalis, Peter Berdowski, in the Dutch TV magazine “Nieuwsuur” on Tuesday evening. With the expected strong wind from the northwest, the massive vehicle is difficult to control. The Boskalis boss said the wind could turn in the next few days. According to the water authority, the freighter is still stable at its current anchorage, about 16 kilometers north of the Wadden Sea islands of Ameland and Schiermonnikoog. No decision has yet been made about moving to a port, a spokesman for the water authority told the German Press Agency on Wednesday. The evening before there was a small problem with a rope that was used to attach the freighter to a tugboat. The stability was not in danger.

The salvage experts had checked the “Fremantle Highway” in detail. “The upper deck is badly damaged,” Berdowski said. “Due to the tremendous force of the fire, decks have also collapsed.” It is still unclear whether the fire was really extinguished and whether the entire cargo was destroyed. The car freighter, which is around 200 meters long, has loaded around 3,800 cars on eleven decks, including 500 electric cars.

The fire broke out on the Japanese ship just over a week ago. The nearest major seaport is Eemshaven right on the German border. Another option is to move to Wilhelmshaven in Germany.
