Freezing cold hits Belgium for several days: “However, we cannot yet speak of a cold snap”

A few winter showers interspersed with sunny spells will drag on our territory Thursday followingnoon, warns the Royal Meteorological Institute (IRM). The maxima will be between 0 degrees in the Hautes Fagnes and 6 degrees by the sea, in a light to moderate wind.

In the evening, the weather will generally become dry in most regions except on the Coast where winter showers or even snow will be possible. Overnight, freezing fog and ice patches will form in many places. The minima will oscillate between -8 degrees in the Hautes Fagnes (even less in certain valleys), -3 degrees in the center and slightly positive values by the sea.

The cold will also settle in our regions for several days. In the RTL INFO 1 p.m., Stephan van Bellinghen told us what awaits us in terms of temperatures.

“Tomorrow the maxima will decrease once more, from -3 to +5 degrees, with once more a few small showers possible. The weather will be dry, and then from Friday to Saturday, the temperatures will drop. A general frost will accompany us for a few days. From -1 to -12 degrees on the heights, -4 to -5 in the center and -1 at the sea. For Saturday and Sunday, we will still have freezing fog with maxima that will not exceed -2 to +3 degrees “, indicates our weather presenter.

However, we cannot speak of a cold snap. “For the cold wave, there is a very precise definition. For 5 days, the maxima must not exceed zero degrees and during this period, the minima must be below -10 degrees for 3 consecutive days. This will not be the case because the maxima will exceed the positive values at sea.”

FORECAST FOR THE NEXT DAYS

After a night marked by almost generalized frosts, the day of Friday will begin with a few sunny spells, numerous low clouds, mist or freezing fog. Then thinnings will develop in many places. The weather will remain dry except for a light winter shower. The maxima will be between -3 degrees in the Hautes Fagnes, 1 or 2 degrees in the center and 5 degrees at sea, under a light wind of variable direction, most often from the north sector to the coast.

Friday evening and the following night, freezing fog will quickly re-form over many areas. In the first hours, a last winter shower may still affect the far west of the country. The wind will generally be weak from variable direction. Temperatures will dip to -12 degrees in the Hautes Fagnes (or even less), -3 degrees in the center and values close to 0 degrees at the coast.

Saturday, the day will begin with numerous low clouds and with freezing fog over certain regions. Over the hours, the cloudiness should gradually dissipate and give way to clearings, sometimes wide, especially in the west and south-east. On the central part, however, low clouds may persist for most of the day. Showers present in the North Sea will eventually overflow onto the coastal fringe. After a cold night, characterized by fairly widespread and sometimes severe frosts, the maxima will not exceed -5 to -3 degrees in the upper Ardennes, -1 to +1 degree in the center and +4 degrees on the coast. The wind will be very light, more moderate on the coast, from the southwest.

Sunday, some timid sunny spells may develop in the west, but the cloudiness will generally remain very abundant in a large number of regions. During the day, some winter showers may occur. They will be in the form of snow south of the Sambre-et-Meuse furrow and in the form of snow or melting snow in the plain depending on the altitude. After another cold night, the maxima will range between -3 degrees in Hautes-Fagnes, 0 to +2 degrees in the plain and +3 degrees on the coast. The wind will become moderate from the south.

Monday, under the influence of a more continental flow and following dissipation of the morning greyness, wider clearings should gradually extend to the whole country from the German and Dutch borders. We should therefore enjoy a fairly bright day. The maxima will change little with values between -3 and +1 degrees from east to west. The wind will become weak from the northeast sector.

Mardi, the clouds should become more numerous once more, but they will also share the sky with sunny spells. The risk of precipitation should remain limited, except perhaps in the west where some showers might overflow from the North Sea. The maxima will be between -4 and +1 degrees from east to west.

Wednesday and Thursday, the uncertainty is large. Our country should find itself near a conflict zone between a mass of cold air and a mass of milder and more humid air. The cloudiness should therefore be quite abundant at times with an increasing risk of precipitation, but the nature of which (rain or snow) remains to be determined. The maxima on the center will remain slightly positive in this case.
