“Freedom Theater…on the Jenin Front”

“Fasaha – Palestinian Cultural” magazine called for an electronic dialogue entitled: “Freedom Theater… on the Jenin Front,” in which it will host a group of male and female artists from the theater, interviewed by researcher and actress Fidaa Zidane. https://us06web.zoom.us/j/85043942137The “Freedom Theater” is considered one of the prominent cultural landmarks in Palestine, and it is the first in the Jenin region, as it was established in its camp in 2006, by the Palestinian prisoner Zakaria Al-Zubaidi and the late artist Juliano Khamis, with a local Palestinian effort.

The dialogue deals with the exceptional journey of theater since 1990, by examining questions of work and creativity under colonialism, and thinking regarding resistance as an everyday and artistic aspect as well. The dialogue also discusses the theater’s recent experience in organizing a women’s theater festival, as well as working on a theatrical project that deals with the recent events that Jenin and its camp witnessed, including raids and struggles.

The dialogue also discusses the work of the Freedom Theater students and their upcoming project under the supervision of Yasmine Shalalda and Ahmed Tobasi, in cooperation with the Arab American University, entitled “Big Love,” as well as the upcoming new theatrical work entitled “When the Martyrs Return to Ramallah.”

Dialogue guests:

Mustafa Sheta; Director of the Freedom Theater since 2016, he is a freed prisoner, political activist, and media researcher from Jenin. He graduated from Birzeit University in political science, and studied a master’s degree in conflict solutions and development at the American University.

Ahmed Tobasi; An actor, director, and theater teacher, from Jenin refugee camp. He was detained for more than 3 years and continued his education at the Freedom Theater, of which he currently holds the position of artistic director.

return ring; Coordinator of the Youth and Childhood Program at the Freedom Theater. She is a graduate of the Freedom Theater School for Performing Arts. She works in the theater as an actress, director, and drama trainer. She has many theatrical works, including the play “Marwah to Palestine.”

Chantal Rizkallah; A student at the “Freedom Theater School for Performing Arts” in Jenin Camp, and a member of the “Naqsh Folklore Arts” troupe at the Arab American University.

Bahauddin Ibdah; A student at the Freedom Theater School of Performing Arts, he participated in many works produced by the Freedom Theater, including “A Keffiyeh Made in China.”

Redemption Zidane; A writer and actress from the village of Beit Jann, she studied social theater at the University of Haifa, and a master’s degree in performing arts at Tel Aviv University. She has acted in several local and international productions, and also offers workshops in theater and spoken arts.
