The constant attacks once morest the freedom of the press and some journalists directly through social networks have made the relationship between President Gustavo Petro and the media has deteriorated.

In fact, on several occasions the Foundation for the Freedom of the Press, Flip, He has referred to the harassment and attacks to which the media have been subjected by the president, the last one just a couple of days ago in the middle of the day of marches and rallies called by the president throughout the country.

This situation was editorial issue of this Sunday, June 11, two newspapers El Tiempo and El Espectador, which used that opinion space to defend the journalistic work of their media and the national press in general.

These two publishers had the replica of President Gustavo Petro this Sunday, who assured, from Twitter –the social network where his criticism of the media is habitual–, that “no one is going to prevent the media from their right to express themselves freely”; however, assured that “No one will take away our freedom and right to express ourselves as a government of change.”

And it is that in its editorial this Sunday, El Tiempo pointed out that, among other cases, the president “has questioned the polls published by the press, whom he called “liars” for not reflecting that his political project continues to hold, according to what he said, the majorities in the country, when it is clear that there is a large sector that does not agree with his ideas and that, in any case, he is called to govern for the entire population”.

The Bogota environment too made reference to comment that Petro made during the marches pointing out to the press that they hate Vice President Francia Márquez because of her skin color, an expression that “implies a dangerous generalization and, on the contrary, It contributes to generating animosity towards the entire press.”

Likewise, El Tiempo exposed the attacks of which several journalists have been victims by “fanatics and violent people.”

“Generating a contrary narrative puts reporters who expose their own integrity in the exercise of their trade in the crosshairs of fanatical and violent reporters. It is not an exaggeration: the same day that the president unleashed once morest the media, journalists from Caracol Radio, RCN and Blu were attacked in different cities”, says the editor of El Tiempo.

El Espectador, for its part, pointed out that although the media make mistakes in the exercise of journalistic work, this does not mean being once morest the Government. In addition, The outlet maintained that “the misleading discourse of victimization” that it is developing “does nothing more than alienate those who are willing to contribute to change.”

“(…) The media undoubtedly deserve criticism of the mistakes we have made in specific coverage, but none of this is an attempted coup. Make no mistake, President, and do not try to confuse Colombians”, reads the editorial of El Espectador.

The editorial adds that “the time of his mandate is still long, but the chosen path of entrenchment, under the misleading discourse of victimization, does nothing more than alienate those who are willing to contribute to change, but not just by bowing their heads. The enemies of that change, which there are and many, today celebrate seeing how any possibility of consensus collapses around the transformations that many Colombians consider urgent and that they believed that with you they were achievable”.
