2023-05-02 23:22:43

On May 3, 2023, World Press Freedom Day will be celebrated under the poignant theme : “Shaping a future of rights: Freedom of expression as a driver of all other human rights”. To mark this occasion, activities will be organized at the headquarters of the United Nations (UN) in New York. In Cameroon, it is time to reflect on the decriminalization of press offences, a subject on the agenda of the Media Network for the Promotion of Press Freedom (RMPLP).

The Press Freedom Challenge in Cameroon

In Cameroon, the media landscape faces unique challenges. “Cameroon and Equatorial Guinea remain the only countries in sub-Saharan Africa where defamation and offenses through the press continue to fall within the jurisdiction of the criminal judge, which is incompatible with the freedom of the press,” says Charles Cacharel Ngah Nforgang, a prominent journalist and press freedom advocate

According to NGOUGHOU TCHAPTCHET THEO NATHANAEL, General Manager of the humanitarian association AD+, “It is necessary to decriminalize press offenses to protect Cameroon’s image internationally, but also to ensure the protection of journalists and professionals in related communication professions« .

The Role of the RMPLP in Promoting Freedom of the Press

Created on June 24, 2022 in Douala, the RMPLP took the initiative to promote the debate around the decriminalization of press offenses in Cameroon. This organization brings together media, trade unions and socio-professional associations, all united to advocate for greater freedom of the press and the necessary legislative reforms.
For the celebration of World Press Freedom Day, the RMPLP plans to organize public debates on the subject of the decriminalization of press offences. The aim is to raise awareness among the public and policy makers of the importance of this issue. They hope to spark a constructive and productive debate that might lead to meaningful legislative changes. This would allow journalists to practice their profession freely and without fear of legal reprisals.

Activities to be carried out and Expected results

The RMPLP plans to organize talk shows on the decriminalization of press offences, to involve various actors in society and to raise awareness among citizens of the importance of the issue. They also provide training for journalists on press rights and workshops to discuss best practices in journalism.
If these goals are achieved, we might see a significant change in the way the press operates in Cameroon. This might lead to greater freedom for journalists and better quality information for the public.

The Media Network for the Promotion of Press Freedom

The RMPLP, which covers the whole of Cameroon, is a key player in promoting freedom of the press. By working with journalists, professional associations and civil society organizations, they strive to improve the working conditions of journalists and promote a culture of respect for press freedom.

On this World Press Freedom Day, it is important to recognize the crucial role played by the RMPLP in promoting an open dialogue on the decriminalization of press offences. Their work is a step towards building a Cameroon where freedom of expression is respected and protected.

The Call for the Decriminalization of Press Offenses

To remedy this situation, many voices have been raised to call for the decriminalization of press offenses in Cameroon. This approach aims to remove these offenses from the scope of the criminal law and treat them instead as civil matters. This reform would be an important step towards guaranteeing freedom of the press and protecting journalists from criminal sanctions for simply doing their job.

World Press Freedom Day is an important opportunity to reflect on the state of press freedom around the world and what can be done to improve it. In Cameroon, the RMPLP is at the forefront of this fight, working tirelessly to promote the decriminalization of press offenses and to advance the cause of press freedom.

As we celebrate this day, let us remember that freedom of the press is an essential pillar of any democratic society. Without it, citizens’ right to information and their ability to hold leaders accountable for their actions are seriously compromised. On this World Press Freedom Day, let us pledge to support the decriminalization of press offenses and to work together for a future where the press is truly free.

Press Offenses: An Obstacle to Freedom of Expression

Press offences, which include defamation, insults and insults, are often used as tools to suppress freedom of expression. In Cameroon, these offenses always come under the jurisdiction of the criminal judge, which exposes journalists to criminal sanctions, which are sometimes severe. This situation is not only contrary to the freedom of the press, but it also hinders the work of journalists and hinders the free flow of information.

Despite the challenges, Cameroon faces a major opportunity to reform its press laws and strengthen freedom of expression.
