Free Mobile subscribers will be able to make and receive 4G calls while traveling abroad in 2024.
After being the first and only French operator to offer VoWiFi abroad to its subscribers in 2022, Free Mobile is preparing to activate VoLTE in roaming in 2024, he told us at the end of September during the day of Free communities.
Subscribers will therefore be able, thanks to this technology, to make and receive calls from their smartphone abroad via the 4G network of the partner operator and no longer from a 3G or 2G network, which will help anticipate the upcoming shutdown. of these two generations of mobile telephony in many countries. This is even already the case, for example, since 2022 in the USA. Subscribers to Free Mobile’s €19.99 package were then deprived of calls for several months in the country.
Free Mobile had, however, taken the lead by inviting its subscribers on American soil in advance to activate VoLTE if they had a compatible smartphone to be able to make calls on the AT&T 4G network. But technological incompatibility of networks has made this type of communication impossible. The American operator ended up switching them to another solution to allow them to make calls via a 4G smartphone.
VoLTE allows for better call setup time and significantly improved sound quality. Furthermore, internet browsing and 4G downloads remain possible during voice communications.
Subscribers to the €2 package and Free Series will benefit from this technology to make 4G calls in France by the end of the year. Until now only subscribers to the operator’s 250 GB or unlimited plan were entitled to it.
